Compound interest, step by step

Compound interest adds each period's interest to the balance, so later interest is also earned on earlier interest.

The formula

A=P(1+rn)ntA = P\left(1 + \frac{r}{n}\right)^{nt}
  • AA is the balance at the end
  • PP is the amount you start with
  • rr is the yearly rate as a decimal, so 4% is 0.040.04
  • nn is the number of times interest is added each year
  • tt is the number of years

Example: 5,000 dollars at 4% a year, added monthly, for 10 years:

A=5000(1+0.0412)120≈7454.16A = 5000\left(1 + \frac{0.04}{12}\right)^{120} \approx 7454.16
YearsBalanceInterest earned
1$5,203.71$203.71
5$6,104.98$1,104.98
10$7,454.16$2,454.16

Adding the interest daily instead of monthly raises the 10-year balance by only about $4.80.

How to convert a ChatGPT answer to Word

  1. Copy the answer

    Click the copy button under the ChatGPT answer. Answers from Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek copy the same way.

  2. Paste it here

    Paste into the box. The preview shows the formulas, tables and headings, with citation marks such as 【4†source】 already removed.

  3. Download the .docx

    Choose A4 or US Letter and download. In Word, click any formula to edit it.

ChatGPT to Word, before and after

The sample answer was copied with ChatGPT's copy button, so its formulas are written as \[ … \] and it carries a 【4†source】 mark. In the .docx downloaded with the default settings and opened in Microsoft Word for Mac, the formulas are Word equations and the mark is gone.

Compound interest adds each period's interest to the balance, so later interest is also earned on earlier interest.【4†source】

**The formula**

\[
A = P\left(1 + \frac{r}{n}\right)^{nt}
\]

- \(A\) is the balance at the end
- \(P\) is the amount you start with
- \(r\) is the yearly rate as a decimal, so 4% is \(0.04\)
- \(n\) is the number of times interest is added each year
- \(t\) is the number of years

**Example:** 5,000 dollars at 4% a year, added monthly, for 10 years:

\[
A = 5000\left(1 + \frac{0.04}{12}\right)^{120} \approx 7454.16
\]

| Years | Balance | Interest earned |
| ----: | ------: | --------------: |
| 1 | $5,203.71 | $203.71 |
| 5 | $6,104.98 | $1,104.98 |
| 10 | $7,454.16 | $2,454.16 |

> Adding the interest daily instead of monthly raises the 10-year balance by only about $4.80.
The .docx in Microsoft Word
The compound interest answer in Microsoft Word: two Word equations, a list of what each letter stands for, a table of balances and a quote, with no citation mark.

What it handles

Formulas become equations
ChatGPT writes math between \( \) and \[ \]. Each formula becomes a native Word equation you can click into and edit.
Citation marks removed
Marks such as 【4†source】 and Gemini's [cite: 1] are taken out, so no stray brackets end up in the document.
Tables stay tables
Tables become Word tables with a shaded header row that repeats on every page, and the column alignment is kept.
Headings Word understands
### headings become Word's Heading styles, so the navigation pane and an automatic table of contents work.
Code with colors
Code blocks get a monospaced font and syntax colors for Python, JavaScript, SQL and other common languages.
Several answers in one file
Paste answers one after another. A line with only \newpage, with empty lines around it, starts the next one on a new page.

Questions and answers

How do I copy an answer from ChatGPT?

Hover over the answer and click the copy button under it. ChatGPT copies the answer as Markdown, with formulas written as \( … \) and \[ … \], which is what this page reads.

Why do formulas break when I paste ChatGPT into Word?

Word does not turn LaTeX into equations, so formulas pasted from ChatGPT show up as code such as \frac{a}{b} or as broken characters. Converted here, each formula is written into the file as a Word equation.

Can I edit the equations in Word?

Yes. Formulas are written in Office Math, the format of Word's own equation editor, so you can click into them and edit. A formula that uses a command Word has no equivalent for is kept as TeX text and listed under the download button.

Does it work with Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek?

Yes. Their copy buttons give Markdown too, and Gemini's [cite: 1] marks are removed the same way as ChatGPT's citations.

Can I put a whole conversation in one document?

Copy each answer you want and paste them one after another. Give each a heading, and put \newpage on a line of its own, with an empty line before and after it, where the next answer should start on a new page.

Is my conversation uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser; the answer and the .docx never leave your device.
